A Letter to the PSEC Community
from the Long Range Planning Task Force
Pennsylvania Southeast Conference
May 7, 2009
Dear Clergy and Lay Leaders of the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference,
The Long Range Planning Task Force has continued its work since the 2008 Conference Fall meeting, when attendees enthusiastically endorsed the goals of the Ensuring the Future initiative. Several conversations during this time have pointed to the desirability of adding to our Conference staff a position that would bring leadership to the initiative, while also serving as a resource to congregations for their financial development.

To that end, the task force recommended and the Conference Consistory has unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Robert E. Fogal (right) to the position of Minister of Philanthropy, effective May 11, 2009. The full-time position will be supported by development services funds, in lieu of using those dollars to contract for services with a part-time consultant.
Bob brings to his role national recognition for his work in philanthropic fundraising, as well as deep roots in the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference. He grew up at Bethany Home, where his father worked for 36 years. As a young adult he was a commissioned worker of the Heidelberg Association while serving on the faculty of Union Theological Seminary in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Bob launched his career in philanthropy as director of development at Lancaster Seminary.
Bob has held senior philanthropy positions in higher education, long-term care and health care. He has also shared his expertise with local congregations doing campaigns and annual giving programs. Bob is widely respected as an educator in philanthropic fundraising—as former director of The Fund Raising School at the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy, as a frequent presenter at conferences and workshops, and as an editor and author of professional publications.
Bob’s primary responsibility is to guide the development of the Ensuring the Future initiative. He will also be available to educate and counsel local churches in planned giving and capital campaigns. Actual campaign consulting with congregations will be provided through fee-based contracts with the Conference.
You will be hearing more from both Bob Fogal and the Long Range Planning Task Force in the weeks ahead. We are looking forward to greeting you at the Spring Meeting.
Peace and grace to each of you,
Dr. Sandra L. Becker, Chairperson
Long Range Planning Task Force
