F. Russell Mitman, Conference Minister
Biographical Information

The Rev. Dr. F. Russell Mitman was born in Pennsburg, Montgomery County, Pennsylvnia and was baptized and confirmed in Pennsburg United Church of Christ. He received an A.B., cum laude, from Franklin and Marshall College, and a M.Div., magna cum laude, from Drew University. He also received a Th.M. degree from Princeton Theological Seminary where he specialized in the study of the Mercersburg Theology under the mentoring of the late James Hastings Nichols. He received a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from Chicago Theological Seminary in 1995.

Since 1993, Dr. Mitman has been Conference Minister of the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ, which encompasses 179 congregations in a seven-county region. Prior to his election as Conference Minister, he served for twenty-seven years as a parish pastor -- of First United Church of Christ in Easton, Pennsylvania, from 1965 to 1971, of First United Church of Christ in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, from 1972 to 1989, and as the Senior Pastor of Broadmoor Community Church, United Church of Christ, Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 1989 to 1992. He is author of Worship Vessels (Harper and Row: 1987), We Worship in Spirit and in Truth (United Church Press: 1989), Worship in the Shape of Scripture (Pilgrim Press:2001), Immersed in the Splendor of God (Pilgrim Press: 2005), Blessed by the Presence of God (Pilgrim Press: 2007) and articles in various journals.

Dr. Mitman has served as member and Chair of the Council of Conference Ministers and as a trustee of Lancaster Theological Seminary. He is Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Conferences of the United Church of Christ Insurance Board and its captive corporation, the United Church Insurance Company. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Philadelphia Liturgical Institute and has been a consultant for worship revitalization with churches in the ecumenical community. Russ and his wife, Ruth, reside in Collegeville, Pennsylvania and are parents of two adult children and two grandchildren. They are members of the United Church of Christ at Valley Forge.
